Complement a Bespoke Home Design with Glass Walls and Partitions

Few interior design styles couple as well with glass closet doors and glass room dividers as Art Nouveau. The Art Nouveau movement took shape in the mid-1800s. No style is 100% unique as they typically borrow from what came before them. In the case of Art Nouveau, styles such as Swiss Design and Bauhaus Design are evident, as are traditional Japanese prints.

One of the reasons glass mixes well with Art Nouveau is the lines. Art Nouveau employs:

  • Long and luxurious lines
  • Linear and even more conservative lines
  • Lines of vertical height
  • The whiplash line that is a favorite of Art Nouveau designers

Designers will often follow or complement the lines with glass closet doors, glass room dividers, and glass home office partitions. Yet, a strong linear focus is not the only thing Art Nouveau has going for it. Another important recurring theme is a concentration on flowers and plants. It’s common to see Art Nouveau-designed apartments and homes with:

  • Stylized twigs and roots
  • Bespoke buds and flowers
  • Plants of all varieties and the prominent use of leaves

A personal favorite is glass home office partitions with plants positioned at the corners. This creates a sense of depth that can be appreciated from both sides of the glass partitions, and the colors reflect beautifully when there is natural light. Another option is to adorn glass closet doors with flower designs either etched onto the door or even painted.

Art Nouveau is known for its strong lines, flowers, and plants, but a third area of focus that is gaining traction is the female form. Also known as the “pre-Raphaelite” take on the female form, Art Nouveau female forms generally contain long flowing locks and voluminous hair. There are some wonderful examples of glass room dividers where “pre-Raphaelite” designs are displayed on a wall, and the glass divider frames the design as a painting or rendering. Homeowners will employ an entryway where the glass partition is squarely centered to lead the person’s gaze through the glass and onto the painting. It is a striking complement to any home office.

The beauty of Art Nouveau is that it has stood the test of time. Although glass partitions and room dividers came later, nothing complements this timely style better than glass.
